Find out what's happening in the area of Horizon Europe, Digital Europe and Horizon 2020
The results of the 2022 European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant call (call deadline 28 April 2022) were published. Advanced grants are open to active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years. The Principal Investigators (PIs) should be exceptional leaders in terms of originality and significance of their research contributions.
Of the 1647 submitted proposals 218 researchers with 27 different nationalities received an ERC Advanced grant: 64 In Life Sciences, 94 in Physical Sciences and Engineering and 60 in Social Sciences and Humanities. In the ERCEA news articles more background on the evaluation results, call statistics and several project examples are highlighted.
However the statistics and final list are provisional since the UK is still considered non-associated to Horizon Europe. The successful proposals of applicants based in a country in the process of associating to Horizon Europe will be eligible for funding only if the relevant Horizon Europe association agreement applies by the time of the signature of the grant agreement.
Among the 218 selected researchers are five based at Flemish host institutions. The projects of these five PIs are presented in the news articles of Universiteit Gent and KU Leuven. The KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals has published an interview with professor Koen Binnemans where he explains what the CIRMET project is about.

The Stargate project obtained funding under the special Green Deal call of Horizon 2020, more in particular under the topic of “green ports and airports”. It received the maximum score of the evaluators and was selected out of more than 40 projects. Stargate’s purpose is to prove that sustainable aviation is possible and happening. It focuses on the further decarbonization of the aviation industry, the improvement of local environmental quality and the stimulation of the modal split. Together with a consortium of 21 European partners with a diverse and rich expertise (airports, community partners, knowledge institutions, consultants, local governments, …), Brussels Airports takes the lead as lighthouse airport to develop and implement innovative solutions. Results that prove successful can be deployed at the fellow airports (Toulouse, Budapest, Athens). Over the course of the coming five years, the consortium will exchange knowledge to investigate and realize more than 30 concrete projects.
